Panhellenes at Methone: graphe in Late Geometric and Protoarchaic Methone, Macedonia (ca 700 BCE)

Recent excavations, ongoing since 2003-04, have begun to bring to light ancient Methone in the southern tip of the Haliacmon River Delta, immediately north of modern-day Agathoupolis, ca 35 kilometers south of Thessaloniki. Methone was established, according to the ancient sources, by colonists from Eretria in Euboea during the second colonization (800-500 BCE) and is the oldest colony of the southern Greeks on the northern shores of the Aegean. By the end of the 8th century, with the safest harbor in the Thermaic Gulf, Methone became a chief commercial and industrial centre.

Methone occupies two hills, which were located by the sea before sedimentations of the rivers Axios, Loudias, and especially nearby Haliacmon pushed the coastline ca 500 meters away from the site. On the eastern, lower hill habitation starts already by the late Neolithic (5200 BCE) and continues throughout the Bronze Age (3000-1050 BCE), while a Late Bronze Age (1400-1050 BCE) cemetery has been located on the western, higher hill. During the Early Iron Age (1050-700 BCE) habitation extends on both hills, and the finds from the eastern hill confirm that colonists from Eretria settled in Methone around 733 BCE.

Unique and so far unprecedented for Macedonia are the pots and potsherds unearthed from a rectangular pit of 3.50x4.50 meters in plan and 10.50 meters in depth, apparently used as an apothetes. The greatest majority of these sherds dates to ca 700 BCE, and 191 of them, recently pieced together, bear inscriptions, graffiti, and (trade)marks inscribed, incised, scratched and rarely painted, which are published by Matthaios Bessios, Yannis Tzifopoulos, and Antonis Kotsonas (http://ancdialects.greeklanguage.gr). The Conference will be devoted to the significance of these finds for archaeology, ancient history, literature, and the study of the Greek dialects.

Συνάντηση Εργασίας για τις Αρχαίες Ελληνικές Διαλέκτους

Το Κέντρο Ελληνικής Γλώσσας, στο πλαίσιο της Πράξης «Διάλεκτοι της Αρχαίας Ελληνικής με κομβική ιστορική σημασία για τη συνέχεια της ελληνικής γλώσσας και πολιτισμικής παράδοσης», οργανώνει διεθνή συνάντηση εργασίας στη Θεσσαλονίκη στις 12 και 13 Οκτωβρίου 2012. Η συνάντηση θα εστιάσει στις βορειοδυτικές διαλέκτους της αρχαίας ελληνικής με ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στην αρχαία μακεδονική, ενώ ταυτόχρονα θα συζητηθούν θέματα που αφορούν την αρχαία και νέα ελληνική διαλεκτολογία, υπό το πρίσμα και νέων αρχαιολογικών και γλωσσικών δεδομένων. Η συνάντηση αυτή συμπληρώνει την πρόσφατη τετράγλωσση έκδοση του ΚΕΓ Αρχαία Μακεδονία: Γλώσσα, ιστορία, πολιτισμός, και ξανανοίγει τη συζήτηση γύρω από την ταυτότητα της αρχαίας μακεδονικής διαλέκτου με καθαρά επιστημονικούς όρους, προσθέτοντας μάλιστα μια διεπιστημονική ματιά στην αντιμετώπιση του θέματος. Γλωσσολογία, φιλολογία, ιστορία και αρχαιολογία συνεργάζονται προκειμένου να (επαν)αξιολογήσουν τη γλωσσική πραγματικότητα για ένα κομμάτι της Ελλάδας που είχε «ξεχαστεί» στα άκρα του αρχαιοελληνικού κόσμου. Ένα κομμάτι όμως που αποτελεί, με  βάση και τα συμπεράσματα του τόμου, αναπόσπαστο τμήμα του ιστορικού, πολιτισμικού και γλωσσικού τοπίου της αρχαίας Ελλάδας, έχοντας διατηρήσει ορισμένα από τα χαρακτηριστικά που πρέπει να ήταν κοινά και με τα υπόλοιπα ελληνικά φύλα σε μια παλαιότερη περίοδο. Η συμμετοχή, τόσο στον τόμο  όσο και στη συνάντηση εργασίας, ειδικών της διεθνούς επιστημονικής κοινότητας συμβάλλει στην αντικειμενική και έγκυρη προσέγγιση του θέματος, στην ενίσχυση της σχετικής έρευνας, καθώς και στην ενδυνάμωση ενός εθνικού-πολιτικού διαλόγου που θα διεξάγεται με όρους επιστημονικής τεκμηρίωσης και όχι ανυπόστατης παραφιλολογίας.

Thessaloniki International Conference on Greek Epigram

Dialect, Diction and Style in Greek Literary and Inscribed Epigram

Verse inscriptions and literary epigrams have attracted the attention of classical scholarship for a variety of reasons: extending over an impressive range of time from the archaic era until the Byzantine period, the epigram is a multifaceted genre that can be studied for its formalistic features, its thematics and aesthetics, its narrative technique, its typology and classification, its ascription into the ideological and social contexts, its value as archaeological and historical evidence, its cultural impact and reception.

The forthcoming conference will focus on a less-discussed aspect of the epigram, that of language and style. Scholars are encouraged to explore the dialect(s), diction and style of literary epigrams and inscriptions from both traditional and modern viewpoints (rhetoric, linguistics, history of language, textual criticism, aesthetics, reader-response theory, cultural studies).

Issues that will be addressed include among others: the dialectic variety of the epigram as a historical and/or literary phenomenon; epigrammatic Kunstsprache and matters of spelling, syntactical patterns and dialectal admixture; linguistic realism, colloquialisms and vernacular diction; poetic vocabulary, glossai and special terminology in the literary epigram; formalistic uses of the epigrammatic discourse (riddles, acrostics, visual and aural wordplay); the interplay between language, narrative and thematics (e.g. visualization through ecphrastic language, subjectivity and point of view, genres of epigrammatic discourse); the textuality of the epigram as an act of writing and reading; language and reception of epigram.

The conference will be held in English.

The conference is planned within the Action “Ancient Greek Dialects of vital importance for the continuity of the Greek language and the cultural tradition” (NSRF 2007-2013).

The Linguistic Map of Central and Northern Greece in Antiquity

The emphasis of the conference is on the linguistic map of Central and Northern Greece in antiquity (from the beginnings up to the Roman period). More specifically, the focus of the conference is on the dialect map of Central and Northern Greece, i.e. Thessaly, Boeotia, Aetolia, Epirus, Macedonia, Thrace, and the islands of Northern Aegean along with the coast of Asia Minor and the Black Sea. The papers deal with all aspects of the linguistic make-up of the area under investigation (various phonological issues, morphological problems, and syntactic phenomena) and with all types of evidence: epigraphic, textual, lexicographical, onomastics and other information that attest to the linguistic map of the area, as well as intra-dialect variations and/or sub-divisions, and relations of Greek to other languages of the wider vicinity, such as the ancient Balkan languages. A number of papers take a comparative view as to the way the various dialects interact with one another, whereas other participants take a sociolinguistic approach to the dialects investigated, the various strata and/or substrata observed, the dialectal and/or language admixture, dialect continuum, etc.

The language of the Conference will be English.
